The roots of the word biopsy can be traced back to Greek language- bio meaning ‘life’ and opsis meaning ‘view’ implying “view or appearance of life.” It also has another name Tissue sampling.
Various ways like physical examination, lab tests, imaging, endoscopy etc., can help us know if something is abnormal, but biopsy may be called the surest way to confirm the abnormal problem. The sample tissue is removed from the abnormal area and the healthcare experts examine such tissues usually under a microscope or analyze them chemically. The specialist called pathologist can generally determine the presence or extent of a disease.
There are various kinds of biopsies like liver biopsy, prostate biopsy, skin biopsy, breast biopsy, small intestine biopsy, kidney biopsy, testicular biopsy, tongue biopsy, salivary gland biopsy, rectal biopsy, open lung biopsy, nerve biopsy, muscle biopsy, liver biopsy, gum biopsy, bladder biopsy etc. Endometrial biopsy includes examining the lining of the womb and it can be done by Hysteroscopy and Dilatation and curettage (D&C). If the result of biopsy is abnormal, it means that the tissue or cells have an unusual structure, shape, size and condition and there may be some indication of a disease. Bleeding and infection are the risks associated with biopsy.
